SEO Basics Every Small Business Owner Should Know Before Hiring an Agency

SEO isn't magic, it's maintenance

SEO gets sold as something mysterious — a black box only specialists understand. Most of it is actually straightforward, ongoing maintenance work. Knowing the basics won't make you an expert, but it will make you very hard to oversell.

The basics that matter most

Page titles and meta descriptions

Every page needs a clear title and description that tells both Google and a human what's on it. This is one of the simplest things to get right, and a surprising number of small business sites still skip it entirely.

Site speed

A slow site loses visitors before they see anything, and Google factors load speed into rankings directly. Large uncompressed images are the most common culprit — often an easy fix once it's identified.

Mobile-friendliness

Most searches, especially local ones, happen on a phone. A site that's hard to use on mobile — tiny text, buttons too close together, horizontal scrolling — loses both rankings and customers.

Google Business Profile

For any business with a physical location or a local service area, this often matters more than the website itself for local search visibility. A complete, accurate, regularly updated profile is one of the highest-return SEO actions available, and it's free.

Backlinks, realistically

Other sites linking to yours signal credibility to search engines. Chasing backlinks aggressively (or paying for shady link packages) usually backfires — a few genuine ones from local directories, partners, or press mentions do more good than a hundred spammy ones.

What to ask an agency before hiring them

A few direct questions separate agencies doing real work from ones charging for vague "SEO services":

  • What specific pages or issues are you improving, and why?
  • Can I see the site's current speed and mobile scores, and what's the target?
  • Is my Google Business Profile part of this, or a separate cost?
  • What does a month of "SEO work" actually include?

If the answers stay vague, that's the real red flag — not the price.

A simple monthly checklist

You don't need a specialist to check the basics on your own: confirm the site still loads fast, check that your Google Business Profile is current, glance at which pages get traffic, and make sure any new pages have a title and description before they go live. Fifteen minutes a month catches most of what quietly costs small businesses rankings.
